Great News - 19 October 2009

We bring great news about Luca and even it s very difficult to express what we felt in this period of time we will try to tell you what happen with Luca in Wien.

Luca `s surgery started at 08:00 am on 13th October 2009 and it lasted over 12 hours till 08:00 pm. The surgery was very difficult and complex because of some bleeding issue on the chest and beside this, his little heart was stopped and restarted 3 times. Usually in this kind of cases the heart needs an external pump to help the heart for a period of time but Luca`s heart was strong enough to beat without the pump.

At 8:45 PM he was moved to intense healthcare but his surgery remained open for more 2 days so the doctors could be 100% sure his heart was following the right course and if not to be able to intervene fast.

Two days after the surgery Luca was able to breathe normally without any help from the special breathing devices. At the moment his is still on intensive health care under doctor's strict supervision.

We can say that Luca was a hero and passed the difficult moments after the surgery but this is just the first step in his recovery. Luca needed the surgery because he had an anomaly on coronary arteries (which caused the left ventricle dilation) so surgery was only the first step (which was completed successfully) but the dilation it`s still there and the ventricle needs to recover at its normal size.

Surgeons did their job very well but now little Luca will need to follow medication (form 1 to 3 years) and he also needs God`s help to fully recover.

If all goes well Luca will leave the intensive healthcare and he will go to cardiology where he will stay two more weeks. After he will leave the hospital in time he will need to comeback from 1 to 3 months for supervision.

Thank you all for everything you have done for little Luca, for financial and moral support. Our accounts from Volksbank are still open, every small amount can be a real help.

Hi,
My name is Luca Alexandru Fetcu, I just turned 6 months and I'm 14.3 pounds.

When I was only 3 months old, the doctors diagnosed me with a serious heart disease: dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). All the medical investigations conducted in Iasi, Bucharest and Munchen led to no real answer and no chance of recovery in sight.
It was only the recently done catheterization in Vienna that revealed the cause of the disease: a severe anomaly of the left coronary artery. For the first time the doctors can say that there's still something they can do, but there's need of a urgent surgical intervention.
This operation will save my life, however the costs of it are high - that's why I need your help.

Other details
Name: Fetcu Luca Alexandru
Date of birth: March, 30th 2009
Diagnostic: Bland-Garland-White syndrome (ALCAPA, Anomalous Origin of the Left Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery), Ischemic Dilated Cardiomyopathy
For a better understanding: the left coronary artery starts from the pulmonary artery instead of the aorta. This has led to the inflammation of the main cavity of the heart: the left ventricle. At this moment the heart runs at very low capacity and the death risk is high.
Probable surgery date: October, 9th 2009
Surgery costs: 40.000 euro
Hospitalization period: 3 - 4 weeks
Postoperation chance of cardiac recovery: 50%
Why isn't this done in Romania?: because of the complexity of the intervention and the short time it needs to be dealt with in.
